Overview

"""After a lifetime of being called a nobody, a never-was, a social DOA, I wasn't just popular; I was with the band. Klarissa could suck it."" Charlemagne Devlin is addicted to drama. Plus, booze, coke, and anything else to escape the memories of a tragic loss that still haunts her, including running away on tour forever with her rock star husband, Jubal. The trouble is, his band's back from rehab and she's still partying. When her booze-and-blow-infused blunder ruins their comeback concert, Jubal dumps her for her high school nemesis, just months before their upcoming twenty-five-year reunion. Consumed with envy and a never-quitter, Charlemagne will do whatever it takes to get him back, no matter how outrageous, no matter how low, except getting clean. Her motto? ""Do Anything. Deny Everything."" To help Char's comeback as a rocker wife, she recruits her party pal Robin to churn up some great and not-so-great ""high-deas."" Her plans seem to be rocketing along, until the drugs kick in and her wheels come off, sending her spiraling into epic catastrophes that only fuel her obsession to keep plowing full-scheme ahead. Living with her condescending mother in a year-round Christmas town, with new worlds, guides, and gifts appearing before her, will she ever see this rock bottom as her best worst-thing-ever? Can she finally face her demons to find the love, family, and home she's been searching for all along? Or will she fall prey to a treacherous fate? Laugh out loud funny and wickedly witty, this novel explores the absurd choices and consequences of an addled mind wanting all the wrong things for even worse reasons and the discovery that miracles lie within even the most broken, if they can believe they are worth fighting for. ""The driver slowed as menopausal moms swarmed our rock star cocoon like post-apocalyptic ants feasting on the earth's last sugar cube."" As the former wife of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame drummer Aynsley Dunbar, (Journey, Bowie, Starship, and many others), award-winning author Margaux Dunbar Hession had a unique insider view to the Rock & Roll world. Inspired by her own true events, and with her audacious wit, she created her uproarious hot-mess, scheming, drug-addled main character Charlemagne Devlin, based on her own wild escapades, and as her cross between Lucy Ricardo and Courtney Love. Some of these events happened to the author, some to people she knows and some she made up. Once you're inside the loveable, twisted, neurotic mind of Charlemagne Devlin, you'll be hooked to follow both her hilarious and tragic page-turning misadventures, as you root for her to find her place in this world."

Reviews

"""Great dark humor, and all too true. Reminds me of one of my ex-wives..."" - Aynsley Dunbar, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Drummer, Journey ""I LMFAO through the whole book. I've lived inside the rock world, and this book kicks ass! This story is all sex, drugs and lots of heart."" - Mick Mashbir, Guitarist, Alice Cooper band ""In Soaring to New Lows, Margaux Dunbar Hession takes us on a wild ride into the world of Rock and Roll with no punches pulled. She's lived it and delivers it up with slam-bang style and pacing, many laughs coming rapid-fire from the page, but this work is, ultimately, about the strength to change one's life."" - Gerald DiPego, Novelist and Screenwriter of Phenomenon, Message in a Bottle, The Forgotten, and Words and Pictures ""Award-winning author Margaux Dunbar Hession's autobiographical work of fiction, Soaring to New Lows puts you there in the glamorous and sometimes not so glamorous privileged life, limos, back stage, and all the other coveted places at the center of rock stardom that most only dream about and she does it with a wit and perspective that can only come from someone who has actually lived that high octane dream and came out as a survivor."" - Matthew J. Pallamary, Multi-award-winning author and playwright of Land Without Evil and Spirit Matters ""Soaring to New Lows, is a delightful roller-coaster romp through the world of rock stardom, seen through the eyes of Charlemagne, estranged wife of a legendary rocker. Sex, drugs and rock and roll never had a more apt heroine. Acerbic, self-destructive, hilarious and ultimately lovable, you will want to follow Charlemagne on every nail-biting, page-turning adventure."" -Dale Griffiths Stamos, playwright, multiple award-winning filmmaker and author of RenWomen: What Modern Renaissance Women Have to Teach Us About Living Rich, Fulfilling Lives."
