OverviewThe name Sergel is widely known in Sweden, but the artist behind it is not. In the 1700s, Sergel was a national symbol of prestige and was praised by Sir William Hamilton as the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo. Yet today, his work has long been forgotten. This is one of the first extensive studies dedicated to reviving Sergel's legacy and exploring his life and art in depth. AUTHOR: Magnus Olausson is an associate professor at Uppsala University (where he completed a doctorate in art studies in 1993), is an art historian and has worked since 1986 at Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, where he previously served as the head of the Collections Department. He has received various awards and honours for his efforts, including the Gustavian Award from the Swedish Academy.
