OverviewIn Screaming through the Noise, poet Jessica D. Vega confronts the lifelong anguish of anxiety, depression, and mental difference. Although she describes herself as both alien and alienated-some saucer-eyed thing that is other than human-this state of panicked disconnectedness from the wilderness around her is the most human of feelings we know. Are each of us truly alone inside our own inner universes? When the earthly crashing and clamor on the outside becomes louder than the steady beating of her own interstellar drum, she retreats inward. Maybe that's why I prefer to sit in the quiet / and let the only loud and noisy thing be / the internal dialogue in my head, she says. But when she can't find relief even there, she turns to her faith for salvation. In the end, the poet finds that being otherworldly can mean more than just the extraterrestrial. It means celestial-from the heaven above and beyond outer space. I want to scream and let it out / until I can't catch my breath. / These things trapped inside of me / are rising slowly like a fire, she says. When the voice of the divine answers her desperate smoke signals, the noise around her and inside her mind finally fades.
