Overview

With the explosion of knowledge taking place in recent decades, scientists are constantly discovering that things they have been certain about are wrong: the continents they thought had been in place forever actually drift around; the cells we are made of are not simple but infinitely complex; our genus has been on Earth many times longer than they thought. And increasingly there is compelling evidence that scientists are wrong about our living relatives. One thing considered certain was that the giants and wild men in stories from all over the world are entirely imaginary. Now that belief is under serious challenge. Forty-five years ago giant footprints found in northern California brought Bigfoot to the attention of many revived interest in Canada's Sasquatch. Every year since then additional evidence has accumulated, and now that witnesses can submit information via the internet the trickle of reports has become a flood. John Green has been in the thick of things from the beginning. In 'Sasquatch, The Apes Among Us', first published in 1978, he sampled the evidence from the earliest records up the late 1970s and from all around the world, then concentrated on two aspects of the subject: the nature of the animal described and the wealth of reports from parts of North America outside the Pacific Northwest. When it came out 'The Apes Among Us' was acclaimed as the definitive work on the fascinating subject of whether humans share North America with a giant bipedal primate that is unknown to science. Since then evidence for the existence of that unknown primate has grown exponentially, and individual scientists have written books about aspects of it. Remarkably, however, to most of the scientific world the evidence remains unknown and unexplored, and for those who do follow the subject this is still the definitive book.

If you are interested in bigfoot at all; this book should be in your library. When John Green passed away earlier this year, among other things, I especially remembered this book. Released in the late 1970's, I believe that it was the first in depth presentation of evidence of sasquatch outside of the Pacific Northwest. Mr. Green did his best to cover North America. Being from Florida, I had heard a couple stories of what some locals call The Skunk Ape, but Green had a number of reports. I think Florida (At that time) was the fourth state with the most accounts of possible or likely bigfoot encounters, which was quite surprising. But Green had accounts from almost all of the continental U.S. and some from Canada. The idea that sasquatch might be anywhere where there is the appropriate environment is one of the primary lessons of this book. This opened up a whole new line of thinking on the subject. With his background as a newspaper publisher, he put together a remarkable collection of reports in the pre-computer age, so there was a lot of work involved. He takes a very serious and newspaper-like approach to the subject from many angles - Essentially giving mostly the facts as he was able to gather them. He also covered a wide range of reported bigfoot activity and gives the reader a good look into how they seem to behave without a too much editorializing. As I said; it's mostly loaded with facts. It's a well thought-out book and a well written book that is easy to follow and enjoyable to read. Again; if you are interested in bigfoot, then this book is one that you should have. Its relevance on the subject has not been lessened with the passage of time. I bought this book back in late-January 2004 from an ebay auction and read it voraciously. It is THE bible of all books on the subject. The book boasts information on sightings from all over the United States and western Canada, with several onsite interviews with witnesses conducted by Green himself. Topics covered range from the Patterson/Gimlin film, to classic Sasquatch stories, to creatures around the world, to Indian legends, to mysteries set in stone, to various other aspects of the Sasquatch mystery. At 492 pages, this book is a marathon read, but highly recommended to all who are interested.

Author Information

John Green is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. As a newspaperman for 40 years as well as a leading participant, he is uniquely qualified to be the chronicler of the sasquatch investigation. Between 1968 and 1973 he wrote three short volumes primarily concerned with events on the Pacific Coast, On Track of the Sasquatch, Year of the Sasquatch, and The Sasquatch File, which became standard references in the field. Then in The Apes Among Us he was the first to deal comprehensively with information from areas east of the Rocky Mountains.
