Overview

Young Serge Bering-Strait, somewhat inspired by his love of the classics, and perhaps somewhat inspired by the idea of poetic justice, and simply pressured to let off steam, writes a novel-Resurgius Redux. Coincidentally, or not, he begins his novel immediately after meeting the girl of his dreams. His novel is a futuristic tale of a universe governed by women, called Mize, who bear a striking resemblance to his activist mother and aunties. In the nation called Atalanta, however, trouble is brewing. The enslaved Dongs, as males are called, are in revolt. In fact, there's an underground leader in ascendancy-one Resurgius. This stalwart Resurgius bears an uncanny resemblance to our author, Serge, obviously a wish-fulfillment, for he has everything that Serge has not-especially muscles and courage, though he is several I.Q. points down from Serge himself and wears Serge's actual horn-rimmed spectacles. Through a series of extraordinary battles, the ruling Mize of Atalanta are at last bested by the long-suffering and suppressed Dongs who join them in a happier coexistent universe led by a resurgent Resurgius and his beloved Amanda.

Reviews

Schorb's offbeat plot is clever and amusing. He employs several made up words to describe various acts-which are wildly funny-and his prose is as witty as it is creative. -Publishers Weekly, The BookLife Prize E.M. Schorb's two Resurgius books are quietly hilarious reads which, unique though they are, strike me as belonging to the very league as the comic gems of Evelyn Waugh and Nathaniel West. They abound in delec-table tongue-in-cheek wit. Among their other dis-tinctions, they are master-pieces of style, so skill-fully written that it would be hard to change a word with-out a worsen-ing. This comes as no sur-prise; Schorb for a long while has stood out among our finer poets, with tre-men-dous assets of imag-ina-tion, powers of invention, and the ability to polish his words to a sheen. These are books to give to dis-cern-ing friends, to cherish on a permanent shelf, and to wolf down immedi-ately, being regaled. -X.J. Kennedy Resurgius Redux is a futuristic tale of a universe governed by women who bear a striking resemblance to Serge Bering-Strait's (the imaginary author's) mother and aunties. In the nation called Atalanta trouble is brewing. The enslaved Dongs, as males are called, are in revolt. In fact, there's an underground leader in ascendancy-one Resurgius. This stalwart Resurgius bears an uncanny resemblance to Serge, obviously a wish-fulfillment, for he has everything that Serge has not-especially muscles and courage, though he is several I.Q. points down from Serge himself and wears Serge's actual horn-rimmed spectacles. Deftly crafted, original, inherently fascinating, humourously witty, and demonstrating an especially effective, narrative driven storytelling style, the Resurgius books by E. M. Schorb will prove to be unusual but enduringly interesting additions to personal reading lists, as well as community and academic library Speculative Fiction collections. -Midwest Book Review
