Overview

DJ Kay Slay, a prominent member of the New York hip-hop scene known for his raunchy mixtapes, died of Covid-19 problems. His death was verified by his family in a statement made by HOT 97, a hip-hop radio station in New York. He was 55 years old at the time. Keith Grayson, better known as Kay Slay, was a DJ at HOT 97 FM. However, he had been a major figure in the genre since the early 1990s, when mixtapes he produced included up-and-comers and famous rappers like Jay-Z and, subsequently, Eminem. He was included in the groundbreaking 1983 documentary Style Wars, which looked at the budding hip-hop movement in New York. He tagged the sides of subway train carriages as the king of the number three train when he was an East Harlem graffiti artist known as Dez. His background as a young musician growing up during the ascent of Grandmaster Flash and the Sugarhill Gang, and subsequently as a producer in his own right, allowed him to meet and work with renowned performers. According to prior accounts, he has produced over 500 mixtapes in the ten years after his debut in 1994, showcasing musicians going head-to-head on tunes seldom heard on the radio. Kay Slay's mixtapes have a far-reaching impact outside of New York. The New York Times said in 2003 that high-profile hip-hop battle in the previous three years... originated or concluded on a Kay Slay tape, citing Nas and Jay-feud Z's as an example. Because of the years-long feuds that started (and occasionally ended) on his cassettes, Kay Slay became known as The Drama King. His maiden album, The Streetsweeper, Vol. 1, was produced in 2003 which had his successors in it, it featured 50 Cent, Nas, and Eminem, among others, singing songs mostly created by other artists. Papoose, with whom he departed Jive Records to record independently, was another artist with whom he worked closely. 'Till I came over, the game was uninspiring, ' he told the New York Times in 2003. I resurrected the squabble. I was the one who resurrected the game. Kay Slay hosted The Drama Hour on HOT 97 for years, during which he interviewed a slew of hip-hop musicians and exposed (or exacerbated) rivalries amongst rappers. Kay Slay's family revealed in January 2022 that he was in the hospital with Covid-19. His brothers subsequently informed HipHopDX that he would have to wait a long period to begin his recuperation. Wack 100, a talent manager, described Kay Slay as his brother, friend, business partner, and mentor, saying the two had known each other for 20 years. He kept his fans up to speed on Kay Slay's health and development in the hospital for months. HOT 97 stated it was shocked and heartbroken by the passing of our beloved Kay Slay in a statement on its website. The Streetsweeper Kay Slay was more than a DJ to us; he was family and a critical part of what made HOT 97 the great station it is today, the station stated
