Overview

My WWII Odyssey describes how one day--December 7, 1941--altered the course of Alban E. Reid Jr.'s life, transforming him from an unconcerned and indifferent youth into a ferociously committed Army officer willing to lay down his life to preserve the liberties he had taken for granted only months earlier. Dr. Reid takes you from disillusionment to dedication, culminating in the liberation of a sub-camp of the Dachau concentration camp in Germany. The leadership skills he acquired along his path to personal victory over doubt served as a foundation to his success in his chosen field of education. Those with an abiding interest in World War II history and how political upheaval can alter one's future will want to read this compelling firsthand account.

"Dear Mr. Reid, In sharing your personal testimony as a survivor of the Holocaust, you have granted future generations the opportunity to experience a personal connection with history. Your interview will be carefully preserved as an important part of the most comprehensive library of testimonies ever collected. Far into the future, people will be able to see a face, hear a voice, and observe a life, so that they may listen and learn, and always remember. Thank you for your valuable contribution, your strength, and your generosity of spirit. --Steven Spielberg, Chairman, Shoah Visual History Foundation ""A must read! This memoir provides the personification of the heroic men and women of WWII, the horrors of combat and clearly refutes any supposition that the Holocaust never happened. Written by a true American hero!"" --Lieutenant General Paul E. Blackwell, United States Army (Retired)"

Author Information

"Alban E. Reid Jr. received his EdD in education from the University of Southern California, which led to a lifetime of influencing the minds of American youth through his commitment to raising the standards of education in the community college system. His journey into the field of education began on the invasion beaches of Salerno and Anzio, Italy, and continued through the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of a concentration camp in Landsberg, Germany. The skills he acquired leading young men in combat became an integral part of his chosen profession. This is his story. Stephanie Reid Wilcox, MBA, followed her father Alban E. Reid Jr. into the field of education, first by graduating from Black Hawk Community College where Dr. Reid served as president, and later graduating from the University of Southern California with a degree in English and education. Her career in higher education included positions with the Pepperdine Graduate School of Business and two divisions of Pearson Education. The father/daughter connection to education has remained strong throughout their adult lives. What began as a project for the Reid family archives has become a historical record of his contribution to victory in WWII as a member of the ""Greatest Generation."""
