Safa Hamed learned from a young age how to overcome adversity - with humor and passion. She shares her Palestinian wit with open arms and an open heart. An hour with Safa is like spending an hour with your favorite storyteller, and her gentle narrative guides you through her memories of growing up in Palestine. She will move and transform the way you view the Palestinian story through both her social and cultural sharing in her unique style. A style passed down by her beloved Grandpa, Sidi.Safa's art of storytelling masterfully crafts an engaging, educating, and informing experience of living in the Holy Land as a young woman. Hers is a thought-provoking and empowering story of a spirited young Palestinian woman. Both inspiring and motivating, it is a perfect balance of storytelling and writing as she shares her story and the history of her country. Safa's memoir is an emotional and beautiful account of how she fell in love with books from a young age, giving her access to strong women across the world, such as Rosa Parks. Books ignited an appetite for discovery and learning, a world of choices, and a world of love and freedom.Safa's passion and determination drive her to succeed yet make for a life of unexpected twists and turns. As a young child, she commits to writing her memoir and sharing the beauty and horrors of her homelands. She wants the world to know of oppression and fear, and the reality for children in a land that does not belong.Having watched her loved ones suffer from a young age, Safa promises to bring an understanding of her people and their lands. Overcoming many barriers, she fuses her Arabic passion with her newfound Western freedom. From learning about the Holocaust to Earl Grey, she comes to terms with gaps in her worldview as she settles in an unfamiliar country. She candidly tells how she overcame the pressure of gender and cultural expectation to inspire and empower others.Taken on an incredible journey, you are shown it is possible to love and hold peace in your heart to bring about resolution and offer up a solution. Safa will have you laughing, crying, and reaching out for more with her wit, honesty, and vision for 'Hope in the Holy Land.'

Reading this book, she (Safa) starts as a child obviously, and the perspective of a child. She shares what she knew and what she saw, and as she grows in the book, she also grows to learn more. I love that she openly admits her own ignorance and bias and fears. I think we all have them but tend to hide them. As I was reading this book, however, I found myself feeling fear and anger. I began to see so much injustice on families and people that simply want to lead a happy life the same as me. I was moved. I found myself fighting tears and being overwhelmed by the beauty of it, and from what? I knew nothing!!! Literally nothing!I love that she (Safa) has plans and ideas on how to resolve some of them. Nothing can be done all at once, but a process must start somewhere. A dialogue must begin. Discussing these things as human rights or ethics is one thing, and actually rather easy to do, but I think our own fears and prejudices sometimes get in the way when we try to apply it to peace in the Middle East. This book helped fill in many of the blanks. It helped me see that dealing with the violence has had a very heavy cost on both sides and caught in the middle are these beautiful people who are powerless to change policy on either side. She believes though and has convinced me that with enough voices and enough pressure, perhaps something can truly be done. It starts with knowledge, understanding, empathy, and love, and with those things, the fighting could be reduced to what it truly is, a handful of people looking to cause trouble just like there is in any group of people anywhere. Unfortunately, it seems like due to our confusion and fears, they have been far more effective than they should be. (Review. NY. New York).
