Overview

This volume is dedicated to Jiri Bi ak on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The authors are his former students who currently work in the fields of general relativity, astrophysics, theoretical physics and cosmology. Unlike in traditional Festschrifts with many short contributions, they present several comprehensive surveys and elaborate original works. The subjects range from the motion of stars in galactic nuclei to quantum mechanics on a boundary, and include current topics such as cosmological perturbations, effects of a repulsive cosmological constant, discs around black holes and gravitational waves. An unconventional introductory essay revives Prague's inspirations as personified by Tycho Brahe, Johannes Kepler, Christian Doppler, Ernst Mach, Albert Einstein and others.Contents: Slowly Rotating Voids in Cosmology and Mach's Principle (T Dolezel) The Role of a Repulsive Cosmological Constant in Astrophysical Processes (Z Stuchlik) Stellar Dynamics in a Galactic Centre Surrounded by an Accretion Disc (V Karas et al.) Towards Gravitating Discs Around Stationary Black Holes (O Semerak) Optical Geometry, Inertial Forces, and Embedding Diagrams (S Hledik) Appearance of Approximated Models of Rotating Neutron Stars (T Ledvinka) Exact Impulsive Gravitational Waves in Spacetimes of Constant Curvature (J Podolsky) On the Spinning C-Metric (V Pravda & A Pravdova) Twisting Minkowski Plane into a Cone (V Balek) The Semiclassical Einstein Equations (T Kopf) Boundary Quantum Mechanics (P Krtous) Readership: Graduate students, academics and researchers in theoretical physics, astrophysics, astronomy and cosmology.
