Overview

"""A powerful testimony about the ways neurodiverse couples can cause each other unintentional hurt."" Mona Kay, MSW, Ph.D., host of the 'Neurodiverse Love' podcast In a late-life romance, Eleanor marries Lars, a brilliant database expert, believing their fairytale love will last forever. However, just months later, Eleanor finds herself in COVID lockdown with her new husband as he loses his job and pulls away from her with angry outbursts. Day by day, their marriage fractures. As Eleanor's fears about Lars' autistic profile are heightened, she struggles to understand him and their growing conflict. Even as both partners are diagnosed with cancer, Eleanor fights for what she hopes is possible in their marriage and encourages Lars to do the same. That is until Lars refuses to work with an autism coach to improve their communication and Eleanor must decide whether she will give up her dream of happiness and, if so, how. Disconnected powerfully portrays the obstacles that neurodiverse couples must overcome to keep their love alive. It will resonate with anyone who struggles to grasp how even the closest bonds can break, and then must create a new life."

"""In the initial stages of a relationship, an autistic person has many appealing qualities. However, over time, both partners become aware of what they are missing in the relationship and what they can live with and without. The story of Eleanor and Lars's relationship and eventual decision to disconnect will resonate with many neurodiverse couples and relationship counsellors. My endorsement is written from my heart and my clinical experience."" Tony Atwood, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and co-author of Neurodiverse Relationships ""Disconnected shows the heartbreak that occurs when couples with very differently wired brains don't understand each other's needs and desires. Powerful testimony about the ways neurodiverse couples can cause each other unintentional hurt."" Mona Kay, MSW, Ph.D., host of the ""Neurodiverse Love"" podcast ""Eleanor Vincent pulls back the curtain on her neurodiverse marriage, giving us an intimate and searing portrait of a highly challenging relationship. I read this in one gulp. Wow. This is an important book."" Julia Scheeres, NYT bestselling author of the memoir Jesus Land ""This unflinching portrait of a marriage will change the way you look at love. Through clear and honest writing, Eleanor Vincent reveals her desperate struggle to simultaneously understand the complexities of the human brain and subtleties of the heart, and how they must work in tandem for love to win in a partnership linked to an unavoidable obstacle: Asperger's syndrome. This is a book that needed to be written."" David W. Berner, author of Daylight Saving Time: The Power of Growing Old ""A vivid, courageous narrative about the complexities of neurodiversity within a marriage, and a deep exploration of the reverberating effects of loss and love. Eleanor Vincent shows us that none escape both the wounds and the wonder of love, no matter how we view the world."" Caroline Paul, author of Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking, How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives As We Age ""One woman's journey through the complexities and confusion of sharing an intimate relationship with an undiagnosed autistic partner, filled with hope and longing, who ultimately finds the strength to be happy with her own autonomy."" Maxine Aston, MSc, author of The Other Half of Asperger Syndrome and The Autism Couple's Workbook ""A brave, compassionate, and necessary memoir about love on the spectrum that will stay with you long after you've closed the book."" Lee Kravetz, author of The Last Confessions of Sylvia P. ""Eleanor Vincent's honest and intimate memoir Disconnected was hard to put down-I read it in two brief sittings. She reveals her hopeful path of love, and the realities she had to face that were hard to acknowledge. She shows us how to be resilient and still tender no matter what life brings."" Linda Joy Myers, president, National Association of Memoir Writers, author of Don't Call Me Mother and Song of the Plains"
