Overview

NOMINATED FOR THE MANFRED S. GUTTMACHER AWARD BY THE AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATIONAlthough advances in clinical/forensic theory and technology continue to elucidate our understanding of deception analysis, the current state of the art is crude in most applications. With new interviewing techniques, psychological tests and instruments, Detecting Malingering and Deception: Forensic Distortion Analysis, Second Edition takes the reader far beyond the basic differentiation between malingering versus defensiveness as the two modes of distortion. What's new in this edition? Virtually every chapter has been updated with new studies and investigations from the past decade. The latest information is provided in such areas as post-traumatic stress disorder, amnesia, competency, criminal responsibility, and risk assessment. Several new chapters address not only the development of deceptive behavior in children, adolescents, and the elderly, but even in nonhumans. This authoritative contribution offers the reader specific steps to conduct a meaningful and contemporary deception analysis. Moreover, acknowledging the numerous methods and professions involved, it suggests a framework for integrating data from multiple sources. Nominated for the Guttmacher Award by the American Psychiatric Association, Detecting Malingering and Deception: Forensic Distortion Analysis is the single most comprehensive and thorough rendering of distortion analysis to date.

Reviews

The text is quite readable and free of jargon... Hall and Poirier unfold their approach without rancor toward other clinicians or toward clients, and they do much to rectify the stuffy, overlitigious image of forensic psychology in their humane and sensible stance. They do a marked service by reassuring therapists relationship; in the process of seeking the truth, forensic specialists do not have to abandon decency. I recommend this carefully written and thorough text to all therapists who may themselves be drawn, or see clients who may be drawn, into the forensic arena. -T. Richard Saunders, Ph.D. in Psychotherapy It can be indeed a daunting task to compile a text appropriately bridging [psychology/psychiatry and the judicial system], two seemingly disparate worlds; yet Hall and Poirier accomplished just that with their updated volume. The quality and scope of this work sustained their conviction that not only was this doable, but it was possible to do it exceedingly well. They have produced a reference work, copiously detailed with an abundance of practical 'how to' information that both the novice and the seasoned practitioner concerned with detecting malingering will find invaluable. -George G. Katz, J.D., Ph.D., in the Academy of Clinical Psychology Bulletin
