Overview

Until the 1980s, most national economies were characterized by a clear hierarchy of norms both within the legal order and between public and private ordering. Transnational exchange was then governed by inter-governmental agreements aimed at articulating these national economic systems and associated public and private norms. Since then, this governance regime has experienced massive changes. A great number of new norm-makers and intermediaries now shape the incentives and sanctions that govern economic behaviors, resulting in complexity, unpredictability, inconsistencies, and innovations.The Handbook addresses this complexity, through expert analysis and case studies from a multidisciplinary team of economists, sociologists, political scientists, international political economy specialists and historians. The volume is organized around the logic of questioning how international systems of exchange work. Eric Brousseau is Professor of Economics and Management at the University Paris-Dauphine, PSL where he holds the Governance and Regulation Chair. He is the director of the PSL Institute for Applied Computational Social Science. Previously, he held positions at Sorbonne-Paris-Nord, Nancy and Paris-Nanterre Universities, and at the EUI. He is the founder of the Institutional & Organizational Economics Academy, and past-President of the Society for Institutional & Organizational Economics. Jean-Michel Glachant is Professor at the Florence School of Regulation, EUI and President of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE). He was Professor at the University Paris-Saclay before joining EUI. He has been an advisor at the European Commission and of the French Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE). He has also been the founding editor-in-chief of Economics of Energy and Environmental Policy and is a member of the Board of Editors of Energy Journal. Jérôme Sgard is Professor of Political Economy, Sciences Po Paris. Previously he was senior research fellow at the Center for Prospective Studies and International Information (CEPII) and Associate Professor of Economics at Paris Dauphine University.
