Overview

This book presents and summarizes the new thoughts, new methods and new achievements that have emerged in the biotechnology of lignocellulose in recent years. It proposes new concepts including the primary refining, fractionation, multi-level utilization and selective structural separation of lignocellulose, etc. By approaching lignocellulose as a multi-level resource, biotechnology could have a significant effect on ecological agriculture, bio-energy, the chemical and paper making industries, etc., ultimately establishing distinctive eco-industrial parks for lignocellulose. Additionally, this book provides systematic research methods for the biotechnology of lignocellulose including investigation methods for the primary refining of lignocellulose, for microbial degradation and enzymatic hydrolysis, for cellulose fermentation and for lignocellulose conversion processes. It offers an excellent reference work and guide for scientists engaging in research on lignocellulose. Dr. Hongzhang Chen is a Professor at the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.

Author Information

"Prof. Chen Hongzhang is working as the vice director and the supervisor of State Key Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering, also an editorial board of the Chinese Journal of Process Engineering. Taking the high value-adding transformation of biomass as main target Prof. Chen has received many achievements on the key technologies of lignocellulose bioconversion. Based on the component inhomogeneity of biomass Prof. Chen propose a multi-level utilization thought and establish four platforms including non-polluting steam explosion technology platform, gas double dynamic solid state fermentation platform, cellulose solid-phase enzymatic hydrolysis coupled with the liquid fermentation technology platform and membrane circulation enzymatic hydrolysis coupling fermentation sugar platform. The integration of these technical platforms achieves the ecological industrial chain of biomass facing to the raw materials, progresses and production. All the above mentioned researches was supported by the National Basic Research Program ( 973 Program), the National High Technology Research and Development Program (""863""Program), National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Key Technology R&D Program, CAS Innovation Program, and so on. Prof. Chen and his group have published more than 150 papers in the peer reviewed internal and international scientific journals and 13 books, have applied approximate 200 invention patents of China and 4 international invention patents (authorized 90 including 86 pieces of China Patent, one piece of USA patent, and 3 piece of Australian Patent)."
