This is the central question of the of the present double-volume work, which considers the subject of animal names and naming from linguistic onomastics as well as from the disciplinary perspective of social and cultural studies. Twenty articles on pet names (volume 1) and livestock names (volume 2) investigate how, and with what motives, animals are named and pursue questions such as: Are pets, which are often considered as part of the family, more individually named than livestock? Do names make the gender of the animal clear, as with people, and is there a difference between dogs, cats, and rabbits? Under what conditions are names chiefly assigned? When they come in sufficient number, why do animal remain anonymous? Do changes in the human-animal-relationship, such as with the industrialization of farming, also bring about a change in naming practices? How are, and were, animals in other cultures named? Were the principles involved in Finish names for cats similar to those in German, for instance? What do the names of dogs tell us about the relative status of dogs in ancient Egypt?
