Reviews

"""We can't grow wings, so we decide to accept our gravity,"" Sujash Purna writes. That is just one small sentence among many in this searingly sincere, yet reflectively wry, collection that plumbs the complex connection between humanity and reality. I caught myself smiling at turns, and transported at others. Azans for the Infidel is a terrifically hybrid work that informs, insists, and integrates, with a lot of class, if I may-and grace. -Tarfia Faizullah, author of Seam and Registers of Illuminated Villages In Azans for the Infidel, Sujash Purna declares, ""An American dream touched my tongue as it rained outside."" With Purna at the helm, Azans considers various intimacies, hungers, dreams, and consequences in this hybrid collection that moves decisively through the liminal spaces the noncitizen must constantly navigate. Here the speaker exists ""inside a blurred silhouette,"" and the poems give voice and form-as far as possible-to a deep-seated longing for home, although home shifts. Azans for the Infidel is a bold testament to courage, to leaps of faith, and growing wings despite gravity. -Mandy Moe Pwint Tu, author of Monsoon Daughter and Unsprung"
