Kelley. yOU published last Sunday an answer by Dr. Kel 1 ley to my criticism on his sermon. This answer was courteous and fair, but has failed to convince me that I was in error. At the close of his article he expressed the desire that nothing shall be said by either of ns merely for victory, but all i the interests of truth. In this I most heartily concur. If truth lie with him, I shall rejoice to be beaten. In the same paragraph he requests from me a categorical reply to the question, Is foreknowledge a cause or an effect? I should say it is neither; it is with God as postulated knowledge. I should say, further, what is known to be can not be otherwise than as it is known. My own opinion is that foreknowledge is impossible, and I can not subscribe to the idea, credo quia impossibile est (I believe because it is impossible). Foresight as predicable of man is proved by daily experience. Proceeding, however, more in order, Dr. Kelley says that a sermon upon the laws of nature did not necessarily require that any thing should be said affirmatively upon the subject either of free-will or of the existence of a personal will outside of the observed universe, and this is true enough; but yet it might have been thought strange by a Christian congregation that a preacher should substitute nothing affirmative in regard to the origin and support and control of the universe after disposing of the inept expression, the laws of nature.
