About the AuthorSusan D. Van Arnum, Ph.D., is a process research and development chemist. She has approximately fifteen years of experience in the fine chemical and pharmaceutical industries in drug development and manufacturing. She holds undergraduate degrees in chemistry and biology and has a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She has published research articles on green chemistry, photochemistry and heterocyclic synthesis. In addition, she was a contributor to the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology and the Journal of Chemical Education. Dr. Van Arnum is a member of the American Chemical Society. About the Technical EditorSussan K. Sutphen, M.D., graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisc., in 1982 and completed her emergency medicine residency in 1986. She served 3 years in the U.S. Public Health Service and as a result of that experience practiced primarily in small rural community hospitals in Indiana and Georgia. She switched to Occupational Medicine in 2002. She also has an M.A. in professional writing from Kennesaw State University and is a medical writer and editor. She has had continuing medical education articles published on Medscape, a website for healthcare professionals.
