OverviewPolitical and economic changes are re-shaping the employment patterns and social policies that have dominated life in the second half of the twentieth century. Multi-state agreements such as the European Union are intended to foster economic growth, but how will these benefits be distributed? Will these new policies improve the situation of women or create further disadvantages and further responsiblities? Women of the European Union brings together studies by some of Europe's foremost feminist geographers and sociologists to raise questions about the implications of the European Union policies for women. Focusing on different scales of analysis, it includes comparative multinational chapters as well as national case studies and in-depth examinations of urban and rural contexts. The book shows how work, family and the state function differently in Spain, Italy, Greece, and Portugal than in the countries of Northern Europe. Additional perspectives on diversity are provided in chapters addressing discrimination against lesbian women in Denmark, and middle class and suburban couples in the Netherlands. Women of the European Union challenges gender-blind assessments of the economic and social aspects of the policies of the European Union to examine the implications of Union for the diversity of women within Member States. We see how place comes together with class, life stage, sexuality and immigrant status to affect ways in which women are constrained and develop strategies to manage their work and daily lives.
