Overview

A sumptuous visual record of one of Earth's last natural paradises. From a totally fresh perspective, world-renowned photographer Alex Bernasconi provides a spectacular tour across a magnificent continent. This is the off-road, seldom-seen Africa. Moments of true beauty and natural delicacy show the full splendor of wildlife at one with the landscape. Choosing from among many thousands of photographs -- having taken more than 1,800 photographs a week of some of nature's finest and most endangered animals -- Bernasconi stays true to the best principles of wildlife photography: invisible, honest, creative. He is especially well known for his uncanny ability to capture animals in their true nature, and the pages of Wild Africa demonstrate he is often rewarded for his patience with endearing and humorous images. These are unique images captured by a photographer motivated to preserve for posterity one of the world's most exceptional panoramas of extant wildlife. See it here -- and let's try to preserve it.

Reviews

This unbelievably beautiful collection will thrill wildlife photography enthusiasts, nature lovers, and armchair travelers alike. Highly recommended.--Mike Rogers Library Journal (11/01/2010) Bernasconi's lens demands your attention.--Terry Peters The Surrey Now (11/23/2010) [Bernasconi's] images, whether in up-close precision or in vast sweeping vista, showcase the splendour of the world's oldest continent.--Ashleigh Bond Photo Life (05/31/2011) At a moment when we assume we have seen all there is to see, when the world has been catalogued in infinite detail, that it would seem there is no more to be found, Alex Bernasconi patiently records the surprising spectacle of nature. This opening passage to a breathtakingly beautiful book could not be more apt. Bernasconi, a self-taught photographer, captures Africa's grand vistas and dramatic wildlife in each gorgeously composed frame (shown above and next page). There is a rare intensity to these images, and they are displayed to full effect across the glossy pages of this large-format book. Alex Bernasconi should be hailed as the new (and improved) Ansel Adams. Wild Africa is a stunning hardback ... From the first to the final picture you will find yourself drawn into the pages with mesmerising images. Full of truly compelling images. A contemporary photographic record of the entire continent in all its natural wonder, the book captures a vast array of wildlife and landscapes in a beautiful and poignant collection of well over 100 photographs ... Each image is sure to draw you in no matter how many times you've cast your eyes over them. Multi award-winning photographer Bernasconi here presents one of the finest galleries of wildlife photos ever collected. He shoots lions, elephants, crocodiles, and other animals as if they were models, creating heart-stopping portraits so vivid you'll nearly hold your breath for fear of startling the animal and ruining the moment (how he captured these beasts in seemingly posed positions is mind-boggling). Most of these glorious color and monochrome portraits are two-page spreads, so the sheer size adds to the subjects' majesty. Captions are also presented with thumbnails in a separate rear section, leaving the photos unspoiled by text. The album offers not just Africa's fauna; several breathtaking aerial shots capture the beauty of the countryside itself, offering the viewer a greater understanding of the assorted creatures' habitats. This unbelievably beautiful collection will thrill wildlife photography enthusiasts, nature lovers, and armchair travelers alike. Highly recommended.--Mike Rogers Library Journal (11/01/2010) A solitary gazelle grazes against the blood-red sand dunes illuminated by the setting sun. The immensity of the landscape is softened by the delicacy of the animal's disinterest in it, and the viewer is left awestruck by this amazing picture. Hundreds of striking photographs fill the pages of this large book, which tells its story without words. Bernasconi has travelled across Africa to patiently gather this impressive portfolio of wildlife and landscape images. A blend of colour alongside some black and white images adds to the impact of each format. The family of elephants enjoying the water captured in sharp focus by Bernasconi's lens demands your attention as strongly as if the great animal was standing before you. The collection is completed by the thumbnail images and descriptions at the end of the book.--Terry Peters The Surrey Now (11/23/2010) The continent of Africa is by far one of the most mysterious and fascinating places on Earth. Many artists have photographed this place of exceptional beauty and wilderness; however, few have come close to capturing its grandeur as Alex Bernasconi. In search of the hidden and the unexpected, his images, whether in up-close precision or in vast sweeping vista, showcase the splendour of the world's oldest continent. Here, award-winning and world-renowned wildlife and landscape photographer Alex Bernasconi transports readers through the wondrous spectacle that is nature in Wild Africa.--Ashleigh Bond Photo Life (05/31/2011)
