His father was a merchant sea man and in 1957, relocated the family to America. After high school, Bennett worked several jobs and decided that he wanted to join the United States Marines. Despite passing all the required exams, he was rejected because his elder brother was inducted in the army. After overcoming that rejection, he graduated from college. He saw and experienced the overwhelming crime all around him. One night he was jumped and knocked out; that is when he decided to join the New York City Police Department.
