OverviewMoving abroad presents special challenges to children, for which many families are unprepared. This book, aimed at ages five to ten, is designed to make any relocation move more manageable. Readers are encouraged to express their excitement, fears, questions and hopes about the impending move and are lead through activities which will help them to say goodbye to their old home and adapt to the new one. As they think about the people, places and things they will be leaving behind, they have the opportunity to examine their feelings and to learn how to say goodbye. Readers then move onto thinking about the new country and how best to learn about it before departure. Using all five senses, Blohm suggests, children can learn a great deal from reading and watching TV, tasting new foods, listening to a new language, touching different materials and smelling new scents. Through a series of examples, she captures the essence of cultural differences and concludes by having her young readers start to plan their trip abroad: cleaning out their room, deciding what to put in a backpack, surviving moving day and travelling safely. She also provides ideas for games and activities to keep them occupied during their travels.
