Overview

Feeling exhausted, cynical, or overburdened in your ministry? There is hope ... We suffer burnout because we overwork ourselves. We suffer burnout when we experience disappointment, betrayal, and rejection, or when we fall short of our own expectations. No one who dares to venture great things escapes burnout symptoms. But we don't have to succumb to burnout or let it destroy our ministry calling. When I feel the pressure of where I must be next, I am learning to capture myself in this day and try to give God my tomorrow. When I sense that someone needs ministry from me, I do not assume that I was preordained to be their answer, just the servant who points them to the One who is the answer. I am learning to reset my expectations upon miracles, signs, and wonders according to God's good pleasure. I am learning that most healing is a process, not a destination. Most of all, I have been learning that God is a good Father-not a slave master. He is the patient, loving Abba who sees me as His beloved child. Whether you recognize that you are approaching burnout, have reached it, or simply want to learn how to establish healthy life habits to avoid letting it impact your ministry, this book is for you.

Reviews

I appreciate greatly the way in which Dr. Bassett has used my measure in his work. I set out to gather research data. He has set out to bring benefit from the research for serving ministers. This seems to me to be a good partnership. On the way, Chris has gathered and skillfully used the qualitative data to illuminate and properly critique the quantitative research. Well done! I hope Chris will find ways to bring these insights into the academic literature, as well as through his book. Leslie Francis, M.A., Ph.D., M.Th. B.D., Sc.D., D.Div., D.Litt. Professor of Religions and Education, Religions and Education Research Unit, The University of Warwick More than a good book, this is needed medicine for those who are serving (or have served) God and find themselves burned out. It will help bring healing as well as act as a spiritual serum to prevent others from falling into this trap of the enemy. This book is not only for pastors and ministers but also for the Body of Christ as a whole. It will give church family members greater insight into what their leaders face to better love and support them. Don Sturiano Sr. Leader of Kingdom Life Christian Church in Bradenton, Florida While burnout occurs in every occupation, statistics show that caregivers suffer burnout at a much higher rate. In this thought-provoking and timely book, Dr. Bassett shares his own struggle along with practical tools and resources for dealing with burnout. This inspiring work will help students and caregivers in all occupations to discover hope and find sources of resilience. If you read it with an open heart and mind, it just might change your life. Dr. Brian Bohlman, B.C.C. Founder, Chaplain Training Academy Dr. Bassett's book has opened a door that I am confident will cause me to lay aside my superman complex and seek help for greater wholeness. This book will be a life-changing perspective for any minister, chaplain, or pastor who has lived and served in the trenches of ministry. Philip R. Byler, D.R.E., D.Div. Pastor Emeritus of Trinity Church of McCaysville, GA Weary, Burdened & Burned Out maintains the academic credibility of a doctoral thesis while artfully adjusting its language to be accessible and inviting to all. Filled with interviews, thought-provoking questions, and personal anecdotes, this book will challenge you to assess your level of emotional exhaustion and degree of personal satisfaction in ministry and take steps to address or prevent ministry burnout. Bassett's invitation to leave the treadmill and walk in the pasturelands is refreshing to the soul. Wendy K. Walters Editor, Author, Ghostwriter, Seventh Generation Minister
