Overview

We Have Never Been So Clean . . . Germs are everywhere and so are hand sanitizers, disinfectants, and cleaning wipes. We are faced with cleaning every surface of everything, including ourselves. Our environment and behavior encourage a germ-free lifestyle. Yet So Unprepared . . . But these germ-free habits are making holes in our umbrella of natural immunity. Now we are even more susceptible to illness, not to mention exposing ourselves to toxic chemicals. We Are Washing Ourselves Sick . . . Meet Jenny. Jenny knows germs are everywhere; however, she soon learns that things like hand sanitizer can contain more alcohol than whiskey. She is also surprised to learn that her overly clean lifestyle may be increasing her children's odds of developing autoimmune diseases. As crisis after crisis hits her family as a result of everyday cleaning and sanitizing, Jenny starts to wonder if her attempts at being germ-free are actually washing her family sick? How much are you like Jenny? This is not a book about COVID, COVID-19, or the coronavirus pandemic. The ideas and concepts of Washing Ourselves Sick have been developing in my mind and have been a part of many conversations for over ten years. The COVID pandemic just gave me the time to organize my thoughts, add substantial research, and write this book. I hope you enjoy the book. My goal is to raise awareness of the dangers of an overclean mentality and the potential harm we are doing to ourselves and our families. I will let you decide for yourself if you think we are cleaning ourselves to a healthier life or Washing Ourselves Sick. -S.B. McEwen

Reviews

This is a well researched book on an important topic written in simple language. It's message is clear and needs to be heard. Pediatricians should hand it out to new moms and dads. My years of experience working as a nurse were echoed in every chapter. A well written thought provoking book. We've all been so conditioned to sanitize with little consideration about the harsh and harmful chemicals. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and read this. This book was very relatable and science/data focused at the same time. I appreciated the understandable/non-scientific language that was backed up by facts and research. The narrative McEwen guides the reader through helped me to reconsider my every day behaviors and the impact of those behaviors. Highly recommend!
