Overview

Old Warwickshire had many iconic historic sites: Coventry, Rugby, Warwick, Kenilworth, Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham to name a few. A sense of the past permeates even the very names, but behind the history, and equally fascinating, are the stories of the ordinary people who lived in the greenwoods and rolling hills of this ancient heart of England. Here are the folk tales, passed from teller to listener over centuries, and here too are the legends that grew up around the county's famous sons and daughters. Read stories about Shakespeare and also about Robin Hood; of Coventry's Lady Godiva and also of that city's claim to Saint George; and of the witch who, alone, saved England. Storyteller Cath Edwards retells these tales and more with verve and vitality and illustrates the book with original drawings. 30 b/w illustrations

The lovely illustrations throughout are done by Cath herself, proving she is very talented.

The lovely illustrations throughout are done by Cath herself, proving she is very talented. Warwickshire Folk Tales contains a great balance of stories with ghostly, adventurous, romantic and even criminal themes - with happy and not-so-endings. Cath Edwards has cleverly split up connecting or longer stories into sections here, to be enjoyed separately or as part of the full tale. This makes the reading less daunting and I felt the whole book flowed very well as an enjoyable read.
