Voting in Quebec Municipal Elections: A Tale of Two Cities

Overview

This volume offers an in-depth look at municipal voting behaviour in Montreal and Quebec City, two of Canada's most important urban centres. While Quebec is well known for its provincial-level party politics and thriving nationalism, voting behaviour and electoral campaigning at the municipal level have failed to gain much attention to date. Voting in Quebec Municipal Elections seeks to transform the state of municipal elections research in Quebec through a systematic study of the 2017 Montreal and Quebec City elections. Drawing upon data from the Canadian Municipal Election Study, the authors demonstrate not only the importance of Quebec municipal politics, but the many ways that municipal elections research can inform our broader understanding of voting behaviour in the province. This volume considers the features particular to the Quebec local context, such as the importance of language and nationalism, the effects of local party labels for down-ballot races, and the role of ideology. Voting in Quebec Municipal Elections represents the largest-ever collection of work on local elections in the province's history, making a significant contribution to our understanding of the municipal voter in Quebec.

Reviews

Voting in Quebec Municipal Elections is a must-read for anyone who has thought about whether local political parties should be present in municipal elections. The book provides valuable survey data and analysis about how such parties affected individual voting decisions in 2017 in Montreal and Quebec City. Some of the findings are expected, others rather surprising. A bonus for anglophones is that we have an entire book in English about municipal voting behaviour in Quebec. - Andrew Sancton, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Western University Voting in Quebec Municipal Elections offers detailed and rigorous analyses of voting behaviour in Quebec, and sets a model for the quantitative study of municipal elections. This book is a must-read for scholars of elections and local politics in Canada and beyond. - Ruth Dassonneville, Canada Research Chair in Electoral Democracy and Associate Professor of Political Science, Université de Montréal Voting in Quebec Municipal Elections provides important, in-depth insights into the political cultures of Montreal and Quebec City. This is a very important book for anyone who wants to understand the political scene in Quebec. - David Siegel, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Brock University While the few studies on the politicization of municipalities that exist are qualitative, this book makes a major contribution by gathering quantitative data on political behaviour at the local level. This perspective makes it possible to resituate urban political issues within national problems. The chapters are not only interesting but also enjoyable for both expert and lay readers. - Caroline Patsias, Professor of Political Science, Université du Québec à Montréal
