OverviewHagerman Fossil Beds National Monument (HAFO) encompasses approximately 4,351 acres in the Snake River canyon in central Idaho. HAFO is located approximately 35 miles west of Twin Falls, Idaho and 100 miles east of Boise. This unique terrain supports approximately 380 species of vascular plants and includes examples of native plant communities indigenous to this area. The park consists of two areas located on opposite sides of the Snake River. Approximately 60 acres is located on a relatively flat area east of the river (future monument's museum and interpretive center) with the balance of the monument located west of the river. To better understand the distribution of the plant assemblages located on these sites, the National Park Service (NPS) Upper Columbia Basin's Inventory and Monitoring Network (UCBN) started a vegetation mapping and classification effort at HAFO in 2006.
