Table of ContentsReviewsThis title in the Cartoon Nation series points out that all residents of the U.S. come from immigrants. The first people came from Asia between 15,000 and 40,000 years ago. The Vikings settled in Newfoundland around A.D. 1000, but abandoned the settlements due to the climate. The author discusses European exploration and early settlement. Next, he highlights Ellis Island, the people who arrived there, and the challenges faced by untrained immigrants. The last sections deal with modern immigration. The author talks about the green card process and the lottery to reasons for immigrating to the U.S. O'Donnell also explores undocumented immigration and the process for becoming a citizen. Last, we learn about the benefits of immigration and the future of the process. Each page has several cartoon figures, which reinforce the facts presented. At times irreverent, the humor will appeal to children. The facts are also reinforced by a good timeline. There is a lot of important information in this book. The FactHound website, maintained by the publisher, has links to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum website, a Jamestown and the Powhatan website, and the Library of Congress website. The glossary, a bibliography, and an index are useful.-- Children's Literature Comprehensive Database I just got The Explosive World of Volcanoes with Max Axiom. Thank you so much! My students, especially the boys, love your Graphic Library books and will be thrilled with this new Max Axiom title. I was reluctant to buy this style book, just because it doesn't appeal to me personally, but being the mother of two boys, I realized that I should give Graphic Library a try. I'm so glad I did. The Capstone books I purchased last spring have had huge circulation rates and have made readers out of many boys over whom I have often worried. I'm not so worried any more. I really don't think I could buy enough of them, but I certainly will try. Thanks again! -- Julie Hunter Author InformationLiam O'Donnell was born in Northern Ireland and grew up in Canada. He's lived in Toronto, Canada and is the author of several graphic novels, including the Max Finder Mystery series of you-solve-it comics. He's never met a pirate and not sure if he ever wants to. When he's not writing stories, he loves playing video games and going camping, but not at the same time. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
