Overview

"What follows are some tried and tested ideas to help make the tedious and often dangerous job of the door supervisor a little more manageable and effective. The mindset and game plan needed to make you efficient in this line of work will require some thought and practice. Of course practice of physical techniques are important, and being aware and switched on must be our power base from which we can make our game plan functional. This will allow us to deal with any and all situations that we may face in the pub/night club environment. But make no mistake only active learning through personal experience is what will mould you into a capable door man/woman. So time must be served, fear must be felt, and that reliable adrenaline rush must be controlled. It is essential that no matter how difficult it becomes you must return to it night after night and forge yourself if you are to become at all functional in this line of work. Of course you might consider working the door for no reason other than to supplement your income with a few quid, in which case you may take only a half interest in how you do the job, but I could think of easier jobs to do for that little extra money. In fact, I would go as far to say that most jobs are more appealing especially when it goes tits up and you find yourself facing some bottle wielding Neanderthal who wants to introduce you to some ugly violence. I think in such circumstances that most of us would rather be anywhere else other than there at that moment! I have worked as a doorman for the last ten years on and off, and I have found that once you start its quite hard to leave, for me personally I always seem to come back to it. Anyway, in this time I have met people from all walks of life, and I have worked in all sorts of places, some respectable and some very undesirable ones also. I have often heard the comment ""you've got an easy number there mate, what do you get fifty quid for just standing there? Money for old rope."" In reality even in those nice, quiet and respectable places the potential for violence will exist, in fact where ever you find people and alcohol you have the recipe for trouble and that's without adding drugs or mental health to the equation. Even on those quite nights when everything goes without a hitch, most door staff will agree that you will earn your money via tired feet, spates of boredom and a tired mind from keeping aware all night. Then of course you have those occasions when it all kicks off, believe me when I say that it is at such times you can feel like you have earned your money for the whole year in one night, especially if there has been multiple incidents in one night. My intention for writing this book is to provide you with some thoughts and practical techniques that I have found to be effective during my time in the job. Some of these ideas come from veteran doormen that I have worked and trained with, as well as input from law enforcement people and individuals that I consider to have had a lot more experience than myself in the field of physical confrontation. This is also based on knowledge that I have acquired from twenty years of training in various combative arts and from the physical and psychological confrontations I have had since the school play yard up to the present day. These include some street fights, the odd bar brawl and quite a few situations within door and security work. From all my experiences and lessons learned from my peers, I have personally absorbed what I have found useful for me. I suggest that you read this offering with an open mind and do likewise. Please note that the ideas offered here have been tried and tested under pressure, some from my own experience and others by my peers from whom I have learned a lot, these people will get their acknowledgement where it is due."
