OverviewFew things are more satisfying than meeting a parent who is at their wits' end and helping them learn how to guide their children into becoming happy, successful, and kind adults. Great joy comes from guiding parents from exhaustion, frustration, and confusion to confidence, skillfulness, and wisdom. Transforming parents and their kids takes time and effort. Being a parent truly is one of the most challenging jobs in the world. It is astonishing how much influence we have over our children. Being thrust into parenthood with very little training, and usually, the minimal experience can be scary and overwhelming. The love we have for our children is what motivates us to become better parents. I wish that were enough, but we also need information, skill, and practice to raise healthy children. It is written in a way that every parent can relate to, full of real-life and practical examples, and understandable instruction. Thank you for understanding children, behavior, and relationships so well and for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us! -Valerie Hoffer MA, Licensed Mental Health Counselor I found this book to be a refreshing change in contrast to so many self-help books written in terms that don't feel relatable to the everyday challenges of parenting. The real-life scenarios and thought-provoking questions were extremely helpful in providing guidance and hope, making the experience of reading this book, both personal and rewarding. -Sandy O'Brien, RN, MN, ACM, CL What I enjoyed most about reading 'The Up and Up on Parenting' was the simple yet powerful instruction on how to handle everyday parenting questions. Using time-honored parenting techniques, Geralyn writes in a way that is easy to follow with substantial redirection that brings hope to those facing difficult behaviors. Each section was a pleasure to read and reflect on. -Kara Meyer, MS, LMHC, CMHS I loved this book! As a parent, this is a book I wish I would have read when my kids were still kids! As an educator, this is a book I'm glad I read now. The strategies and solutions provided by this thought-provoking and entertaining book can be applied to both parents and teachers. Filled with pertinent quotations, antidotes, exercises to deepen your thinking, and spot-on advice, this book is a must-read for any parent or teacher who seeks to fully understand effective and thoughtful strategies to teach life lessons to young people. I came away from this book refreshed, hopeful, and eager to try some of these strategies with my students and my grandchildren. Not only does Ms. Peterson cover a myriad of situations that come up frequently in a course of a normal life, she delves into the how and the why of human behavior a lot deeper than many books or discipline programs dare to go. Highly recommended! -Wayne Osborn, National Board Certified Teacher, M.Ed, M.L.I.S. Many of the struggles we have with the boys is our lack of structure. Bedtime is riddled with distractions. Our patience gets frayed trying to keep the boys focused. The Up and Up on Parenting has taught me to say, I like that you're coming up with all these ideas, but you still need to get your pajamas on. Or to calmly respond to every But I just gotta..., with the simple word, Pajamas. We are making progress by building predicab structure into our home. Thank you for the positive influence you have had on our lives! -Venessa L Walker, MA Science Education The Up and Up on Parenting really challenged my thinking surrounding discipline in the classroom. As a high school teacher, it can be easy to react impulsively and emotionally to a student who is misbehaving. As a result, the fragile relationships that I have with my students can be harmed. Ms. Peterson's book inspired me to reconsider how I approach student misbehavior. I am equipped with new tools, strategies, and a more positive mindset surrounding student consequences. -Rachel Pack, M. Ed.
