Amongst many popular plays, novels, and epics, he authored the tragic fairy tale novella 'Undine' (1811). The story was highly influential and inspired Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid' (1837). He was also the first modern German to dramatize the Nibelung legend in 1808.
