Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationAbout the Author Joseph Conrad (1857 - 1924) was a Polish-British writer and one of the greatest novelists to have written in the English language although he did not speak English fluently until his twenties. He joined the British merchant marine in 1878, and was granted nationality in 1886. He wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting. His narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced authors including F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Andre Malraux, George Orwell, Graham Greene, John le Carre, Philip Roth, and Salman Rushdie. Many Hollywood films have been inspired by Conrad's books. He drew on his own history, writing books that reflected a European-dominated world-including imperialism and colonialism-and explored the human psyche.
