Excerpt from Two Lectures on South Africa: Delivered Before the Philosophical Institute Edinburgh, Jan; 6& 9, 1880 I could not run this risk. I decided after some reflection that for once I would leave the history of the past, and turn to a question of present interest and the present time. I may make mistakes in talking about it, but if I do there is no danger of your detect ing me. I wish there was. For the South African question is a very knotty one indeed, and the knots can only be untied when the British people will please to pay attention to it. We can hardly say that it is of no importance to us. We have just been killing about twenty thousand people in South Africa - people who had done us no harm we only feared that perhaps they might do us harm. We have annexed a country as large as France, which belonged to Dutchmen. Dutchmen do not like to have their independence taken from them any more than we do, and nobody exactly knows why we did it. I believe that in our hearts we are sorry now that we annexed it at all, and would be glad to get rid of it again, if we only knew how to get rid of it without seeming ridiculous to the rest of the world.
