Reviews

We have come a long way since people referred to chaplaincy as 'loitering with intent'! Nowadays chaplaincy is a recognized health-care discipline with an ever-growing evidence base to show exactly why we need it. George Fitchett has been a vital voice in the development of chaplaincy research and putting chaplaincy on the map as a credible and evidence-based enterprise. This book is more than a reader. It is a foundational text that should be central to the reading list of all who take chaplaincy and research seriously. --John Swinton, Professor in Practical Theology and Pastoral Care, University of Aberdeen Through his pioneering research, transformational vision, and deep humanity, George Fitchett has led the way toward the establishment of chaplaincy as a vital partner in the system of health care. This book highlights the seminal work of George Fitchett and his central role in the modern evolution of the discipline of health-care chaplaincy. --Kenneth Pargament, Professor emeritus of Psychology, Bowling Green State University I read the first article as a chaplain resident, and it transformed my idea of chaplaincy. Later articles transformed my practice. Nolan and Damen have curated a collection of articles showing how George transformed the field, developing evidence for what chaplains were doing--or ought to be doing instead! More importantly, Nolan and Damen have provided an example for others to further transform the profession and improve the healing and wholeness chaplains mediate. --David Grossoehme, Adjunct Research Associate Professor, Northeast Ohio Medical University
