OverviewTrail's End is a compilation of accidental and unintentional deaths that have occurred on or near the Appalachian Trail since its completion in 1937. Its main goal is to succinctly chronicle each of the individual stories for trail users who have lost their lives while recreating on the AT, but also seeks to explore and provide insight into the type and frequency of the specific kinds of fatalities suffered by those in the hiking and backpacking communities. Nobody sets off on a hike or overnight adventure expecting the worst. These activities, however, while generally safe, are not entirely without risk. Some may find the most common causes of accidental deaths along the trail surprising. The circumstances and details contained in each of these stories provide not only insight into each tragedy but also serve to better understand the real potential for danger in wilderness settings. This updated version (as of November 2022) has identified 168 individual fatalities. Future versions of this book will be required to capture future incidents as well as historical events that have been previously overlooked. The current edition includes hiking and backpacking accidents through the end of the 2022 hiking season as well as an additional 16 historical events that were identified since completing the first publication.
