In 1978 a family of a man, his wife, and their five children headed for the Peace River country of Alberta and British Columbia to find a pastoral, peaceful, sustainable, and real life. It was not a whimsical or desperate venture but thought out for a long time before the actual actions occurred and was a true family project. This book describes in a rather chronological manner, and mostly from the perspective of the man, how the ideas and dreams were formed, how the family transition from an urban life style to a country life style and finally to a life of self sufficiency was accomplished, if only for a brief period of time. It describes in detail how simple achievements in the going about the daily chores were so satisfying and how sometimes trusting in others, even total strangers, can be life enriching. And there were many treasures and challenges along the way; a baby girl, the sixth child in the family, in the fourth month of their life in Canada, a January where the temperature never get above -18 C (zero Fahrenheit) and the home was heated with wood, no electricity or telephones, the fellowship of truly caring neighbors, enduring the arctic winter nights and the long arctic summer days of 20 hours to labor, and much more. With the modern worldly angst of the energy, water, and natural resource depletions and the soaring population of the world, this book describes how we can, as a species, finally come to a peace and an equilibrium with the earth again, but only when we are all in it together.
