OverviewThree Fair Maids, or the Burkes of Derrymore by Katharine Tynan, Miss Tynan's books for girls are among the best of their kind, and it is gratifying to note their steadily rising popularity. 'Three Fair Maids' should considerably help in the increasing of its author's audience. A sparkling story, with the west of Ireland as its scene. The three fair maids are the three daughters of a widowed Irish lady who is not as well endowed with this world's goods as she might be. Her husband, Sir Jasper Burke, had married her against his uncle's wish, and had in consequence been disinherited. It is the eldest daughter Elizabeth's idea that they should receive 'paying guests' at Ardeelish, their residence since their father's disinheritance had made the occupancy of Derrymore, a fine old house, impossible. The guests come and adventures follow, and the sound of wedding bells is heard; the rich uncle turns from his wrath, and Elizabeth becomes his heiress. The three fair maids are fascinating girls; their story holds the reader to the end. It is illustrated with great taste and skill.
