OverviewAccording to the Bible, a Hebrew woman is a woman of Jewish origin who was strong and gave birth so quickly and safely that she did not require the assistance of midwives. The midwives would arrive after it was too late and thus could not harm the male babies. A Hebrew woman is the type of woman many mothers aspire to be: she gives birth quickly and safely with minimal assistance. Many women, particularly in Nigeria, take the term Hebrew woman far too seriously. It is drilled into our heads beginning with our first antenatal class and continuing until the day we go into labour. All we can think about is the pastor's prayers, our mothers' proclamations, and our friends' well wishes. When you pant, grunt, scream, and push a baby into existence, we are led to believe that you have fully completed the rites of motherhood. A woman can only beat her chest in pride after she has endured Eve's pain and gained the strength of the Hebrew woman. I am convinced that the Hebrew woman ideology is the leading cause of maternal and infant mortality. There goes a pregnant lady. The baby is too big; she waddles and struggles to walk. However, she is adamant that she can and must force the baby out. So that when they ask, you can confidently say I gave birth like Hebrew women.
