Overview

The basis for the cult-classic film The Warriors chronicles one New York City gang's nocturnal journey through the seedy, dangerous subways and city streets of the 1960s. Every gang in the city meets on a sweltering July 4 night in a Bronx park for a peace rally. The crowd of miscreants turns violent after a prominent gang leader is killed and chaos prevails over the attempt at order. The Warriors follows the Dominators making their way back to their home territory without being killed. The police are prowling the city in search of anyone involved in the mayhem. An exhilarating novel that examines New York City teenagers, left behind by society, who form identity and personal strength through their affiliation with their family, The Warriors weaves together social commentary with ancient legends for a classic coming-of-age tale.

Author Information

Joel Richards was the kid who did crazy things just to have a good story to tell afterward. On deciding to make his affection his profession, he received a BFA in acting and a BA in English from the University of Utah. He has narrated over 300 audiobooks and continues to tell his original stories to live audiences. Sol Yurick (1925-2013) was a left-wing, radical writer in America at a time when such men were not appreciated for their talents. Best known as the author of The Warriors, he wrote three great novels of social realism in the 1960s which demonstrated his flair for satire and acid-sharp observation about the social structure of his home city, New York. As the Guardian wrote in his obituary, no writer more fully embodied the city's anguished spirit in the 1960s. Before becoming a writer, Sol worked in the department of welfare in New York. He was later heavily involved in anti-Vietnam protests, worked with Students For A Democratic Society, and was closely associated with leading members of the Weather Underground.
