WAYNE HEARD is a former Green Beret Officer, living in Europe and working in support of Department of Defense.Because of Wayne's reputation for writing, teaching, training, and project management, while in uniform, he was called out of retirement in 2004 and asked to shepherd a new program for the Army-Personnel Recovery- formerly known as combat search and rescue operations. Initially, he helped write the Army's how-to book on the subject and then worked in the Pentagon to help guide the creation of the Army's program. Afterwards, Wayne worked with units in Iraq and Afghanistan in preparing for, preventing, and responding to events having the potential for the captivity of U.S. personnel.Wayne has also worked with the Drug Enforcement Administration to prepare their agents working overseas in high-risk areas. He has written several magazine articles on leadership and management.Wayne began his military career in the 82nd Airborne Division in 1972. In 1977, he was commissioned as an Infantry officer through Officer Candidate School, graduating as the Distinguished Leadership Graduate.After completing Ranger school, Lieutenant Heard returned to the 82nd Airborne Division and led rifle and mortar platoons. In 1979, he completed the Special Forces Officers Course and served as a Green Beret Team Leader in 5th Special Forces Group. Wayne also graduated with honors from his Advanced Officers Course.In July 1990, just two weeks before the Iraqi army invaded Kuwait, Wayne was selected to be the Operations Officer (S3) of 1st Battalion 10th Special Forces Group. Responding to a no-notice alert to prepare the unit for combat search and rescue operations in northern Iraq, he organized and managed the staff and team training. Wayne also served as the Executive Officer (XO) of the battalion during OPERATION DESERT STORM. In ARMY magazine articles and this book, he describes the training program that resulted in the comprehensive mission analysis process that became the hallmark for effective combat planning.In addition to managing the development and implementation of the Personnel Recovery program for the Army, Wayne helped plan the closing of an Army base in Bad Tölz, Germany and subsequent move of the unit and their families to Stuttgart. He led the staff in preparing and executing the base closure plan even while the unit was participating in combat operations. Immediately after cessation of hostilities, he organized the support to Special Forces teams overseeing four camps containing over 200,000 Kurdish refugees.Wayne is the proud father of three sons and a daughter.
