OverviewWithin these pages you'll meet the most prolific safe burglar and jewel thief the Pacific Northwest has ever known-a man named Billy. You'll see how Billy was foiled by a shrewd longshoreman eating a ham and cheese sandwich on his lunch break. You'll meet another jewel thief, Chuck, who never could figure out why the Pawn shops in Las Vegas were onto him. Then there were the dangerous women I encountered. Dangerous because they were driven to do terrible things, compelled by addiction to heroin, trapped by a drug which destroys moral boundaries and kills the soul. Or was alcohol their addiction, with a spiked high heel shoe that became their weapon? Finally, you'll see how the morbid specter of heroin drifted into Albina and planted its poisonous seeds. You'll Learn where it came from, who sold it, where it was available, either in a dump apartment, loud nightclub, or out on a chilly street corner. All these real life stories will be shared in The Tainted Rose: Stories from a Portland Detective. But when he falls in love with a beautiful black hooker named Artent Thomas this book simply takes off into uncharted territory for true-crime, non-fiction. You'll be as blown away as I was. Phil Stanford, author of Portland Confidential Like fellow scribe Raymond Chandler, Don DuPay aims straight ahead in black and white. The color comes from a descriptive word here, a piece of dialogue there. As a Portland street cop, homicide and burglary detective, he's heard and seen ""many people...probably up to no good"" - murderers, pimps, hookers, burglars, heroin dealers, and lazy cops. He's fallen in love with a whore. DuPay's reportage stuns the reader and offers no time for rest or sentimentality. Stylistic crime writers such as Dashiell Hammett, Maj Sjowall, Robert Parker, to name a few, have their favorite locations. Don DuPay has his - Portland, Oregon. He's walked the streets, made the busts, seen dead bodies, listened to liars, and heard every story. Don DuPay invites the reader to ride shotgun with him - laugh, cry, and shake one's head in amazement. DuPay is at the top of his game as he recounts everything honorable and corrupt about society. After seventeen years as a street cop, homicide, and burglary detective, DuPay traded his badge and .38 revolver for a keyboard. His words are like a song the reader can't get out of his or her head. Like watching a ""Cops"" marathon, The Tainted Rose: Stories from a Portland Detective is a relentless ride along with one law enforcer. Take a deep breath, pour two fingers of a fine single malt and start reading - you're going to be up all night. Robert Crane, co-author of Crane: Sex, Celebrity, and My Father's Unsolved Murder Don DuPay is a keen observer of the behavior and motives of both the police and the criminals they pursue. DuPay's book, The Tainted Rose: Stories From a Portland Detective is a raw, vivid and courageous description of what life was like on the streets of Portland in the 1960s and 1970s. Don was a tough cop and a compassionate one. He tells the stories about how the lives of the police and those who commit crimes become intertwined. DuPay does not mince words about his own transgressions; his stories are awash with humanity and caring while trying to keep the streets safe. Mike Lindberg, former Portland City Commissioner DuPay's stories from his days as a cop offer an unflinching, first-person perspective of Portland's shadowy underbelly. Spanning the '60s and '70s, with the perspective of hindsight, history, and humanity, The Tainted Rose: Stories from a Portland Detective is a page-turning literary ride-along, told in the hard-boiled noir style of Chandler and Hammett. Suzy Vitello, author of Bitterroot, 2024 Once again it's Don DuPay's remarkable voice! The voice of an experienced cop, relying on his ""cop radar"" and street smarts to navigate tough characters, horrific situations, and his own raw emotions. Go with him through these pages of his experience. The stories are deeply personal ones from an extraordinary life, after which DuPay is sadder and wiser. You'll be sadder and wiser for reading his stories. A great companion to Behind the Badge in River City.
