Author Information

Marva McClean is a Fulbright Specialist awardee and a National Education Association Fellow who works with educators across the globe investigating cultural practices in education and strategies to improve the academic achievement of children of color whose lives continue to be influenced by the residual effects of colonization. She is a board member of the Florida Chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Educators (FL-NAME) and former board chair of Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator. Dr. McClean conducts collaborative research with middle school students focusing on building historical consciousness of the roots of inequity and utilizing writing as a tool to empower youth and build their capacity as change agents in disrupting the tradition of failure imposed by the standardization of the curriculum. She is the author of several academic publications including the book chapters, Hear our words; honour our heritage: Decolonizing pedagogy in the urban classroom (Emerald Press, 2015) & Disrupting the hegemonic construct of student achievement: Diasporic spaces (springer, 2014).
