Overview

Russia, 1891. The new governor-general of Siberia has been secreted away on a train from St. Petersburg to Moscow. A blizzard rages outside as a mustachioed official climbs aboard near the city; with his trademark stutter, he introduces himself as State Counsellor Erast Fandorin. He then thrusts a dagger inscribed with the initials CG into the governor-general's heart and, tearing off his mustache, escapes out the carriage window. The head of the Department of Security soon shows up at the real Fandorin's door and arrests him for murder. The only way to save his reputation is to find CG--and the government mole who is feeding the group information. Boris Akunin is the pen name of Grigory Shalvovich Chkhartishvili, a Russian writer of Georgian origin. He is best known as writer of detective and historical fiction, but he is also an essayist and literary translator. The author of the Erast Fandorin mystery series and several others series, he has become one of the most widely read authors in Russia. Andrew Bromfield was born in Hull in Yorkshire, England, and for long periods has lived in Moscow, where he cofounded and edited the literary journal Glas. He now lives and works in rural Surrey. Bromfield has translated into English works by Boris Akunin, Sergei Lukyanenko, Mikhail Bulgakov, Daniil Kharms, Leo Tolstoy, and the Strugatsky brothers, but is perhaps best known for his acclaimed translations of the stories and novels of Victor Pelevin, including The Life of Insects, Buddha's Little Finger, and Homo Zapiens. Nigel Patterson, British audiobook narrator and winner of four Earphones Awards from AudioFile magazine, has many credits as a stage, screen, and voiceover actor that influence his powerful characterization across a wide range of genres.
