Overview

Excerpt from The South African Labour Problem On Tuesday, March 31, at the Driefontein Boarding-house a crowded meeting was hold. It was convened by Sir George Farrar, who was one of the Delegates to the Bloemfontein Conference, and the announcement of the meeting had caused wide-spread interest. It was known that at this meeting the labour question would be discussed and special reference be made to the possibilities of the introduction of the Asiatic element. Thore must have been seven or eight hundred men, chiefly miners, present, and Sir George Farrar, who presided, invited on to the platform, in addition to those who already occupied it, all whose names wcro suggested by Mr. W. Mather, Secretary of the Miners' Union. But so large was the attendance that the platform had ultimately to provide accommodation for many others, and thus on the platform not only were supporters of the convener of the meeting well represented, but also Mr. Mather's supporters. Before the meeting began, Mr. Mather's party had been busy distributing leaflets, giving Reasons why we don't want Asiatic miners, the leaflet concluding with the words: When Asiatic miners are employed - no white man need apply. Sir George Farrar had a most respectful, attentive hearing, his preliminary remarks before the meeting proper manifestly having good effect.
