Overview

Herein Part 9, I offer a possible way around the conundrum of the notion of a spiritual and immortal soul, but yet the extreme causal coupling between even the most advanced cognitive and volitional behavior of human persons in this life. I provide a perhaps more scientifically balanced consideration of the immortality of the human soul from the standpoint of being a Catholic physicist which seems to me much more sensible than the ancient Greek or Scholastic approaches of perhaps dated traditional Catholic theological approaches. The living human body is suffuse with electrodynamic and electrochemical activity. Magnetic fields extend out from the human body and can be measured. Electrical potentials are routinely measured along the skin of a living human body. The human brain energy states have a very high correlation with the most advanced cognitive and volitional activity. Thus, the conscious principles of the living human person are strongly coupled with neuro-physical activity. The leads us to a profound question for Catholic spiritual anthropologists. Is the human soul related to the electromagnetic force, and if so, how? Traditional Catholic theology holds that the human soul is spiritual and immortal, and by some accounts, created directly by GOD at the moment of conception, ex nihilo. Scholastic theologians assert that the human soul is the substantial form of the human body in the Platonic or Aristotelian sense of the word form. Contemporary theological approaches to the ontology of the human soul are somewhat ambivalent to the extreme dualism of Scholasticism and ancient Greek interpretations of the human soul. So who is right and what objective evidence do we have to go on regarding the human soul? We can safely state that conscious human processes, even the most advanced ones, have been shown to be highly coupled to human brain energy states. This can be seen in the large numbers of brain injuries and cases of diagnosed psychophysical decline in the aged that have been studied over the past century or more. The observation of human test subjects performing mental or emotional tasks by modern imaging methods have clearly demonstrated a causal relationship between even the most advanced cognitive and volitional processes and specific types of brain energy states.
