She has been internationally published and writes fiction under the name Montano, and non-fiction on Autism under the name Santomauro. She grew up in rural Australia within a strong Italian community. From the age of nine, she self-published her own books for borrowing at the school library, and received her first rejection letter from Golden Books when she was thirteen. Kathy has written over twenty books for children and adults, with translations into sixteen languages. She has won, and been shortlisted for, many literary awards including the Children's Book Council of Australia Award and has four times been awarded a silver Nautilus Award (US) for books that change the world.
