Overview

Being diagnosed with a life threatening illness is like falling out of a nest where we felt safe and warm. Suddenly the world is cold and very big. We need new eyes and lots of heart to navigate our way through the unknown territory we now inhabit. In The Scalpel, The Paintbrush and The Pen, Marilyn Hagar gives us an in depth view of her healing journey from the shock of her first symptom, to her eventual treatment and recovery. What is unique about her story is that while she was going to medical appointments, submitting to tests, and weighing the pros and cons of treatments, another part of her, her magical child inside was on an adventure. She was playing, asking questions, exploring, making art, singing, dreaming and talking to foxes. The vitality of this wild child and her belief that anything is possible is an important part of the story told here because being open to all possibilities goes hand in hand with being open to healing. Hagar has worked for many years as an expressive arts therapist. The art the author made, her dreams, and the intuition that guided her are deeply woven into the story she tells here. This book is testimony to the fact that when confronted with our own mortality we need more than our rational minds to guide us. It is vital that we look inside for deeper ways of knowing so that as we walk the labyrinthian path through the medical world asking our doctors for help, we bring all of our own inner strength to our healing journey.

"""More than the great storytelling, personal challenges, and lessons of Marilyn's intimate account of her healing journey, this book is a call to experiment and trust our own inner voices. Through the darkest confusion, fear, and depression, we see a courageous woman face it all head-on. With a deep trust in her dreams and her art, she inspires us to discover new ways of framing our dilemmas. She works for her insights by paying attention to the synchronicities that connect outer and inner reality, and invites us to hope and believe in ourselves, so that through her example we can imagine the potential in ourselves to grow in understanding of bigger truths."" Lindsay Wansbury, Psychotherapist (Retired) ""As an art integration consultant working to offer healing to children and adults post-pandemic, I know that art is essential, not optional. What a treasure to experience this so deeply in The Scalpel, the Paintbrush, and the Pen. This book is an invitation to a deeply moving journey. Marilyn Hagar knows the power of art to heal, to reflect, and to integrate our inner and outer worlds. Sharing her experience is a gift that can help others navigate a difficult journey."" -Joanna Wigginton, artist, teacher and arts integration specialist ""An intimate reflection on one wise woman's medical journey from symptom to recovery. This book relates how Marilyn Hagar turned to her trusted inner guides, her dreams and her art, to support her when her life was radically disrupted with an illness. She inspires us to access our inner healer when faced with challenges, and reminds us that when dealing with chaotic times, we can't hold on to a frozen notion of who we think we are or how we think things should be. In her words, 'Better to open to the creative power deep inside and listen to our instincts and intuitions about what is trying to emerge.'"" -Joan Stanford, poet, art therapist, and author of The Art of Play: Ignite Your Imagination to Unlock Insight, Healing, and Joy ""I was deeply moved by The Scalpel, the Paintbrush, and the Pen, a story of healing that is full of wisdom, courage, and heart. Marilyn's truth-telling and self-reflection on her experiences illustrate that our individual paths through illness and treatment are mythic healing journeys on which we can discover resources deep within ourselves as we partner with the helpers we encounter along the way."" -Mary Cavagnaro, poet, psychotherapist ""Marilyn Hagar has been my teacher. This book helps me to see that even under the direst circumstances we have access to resources, within and without, that we might never have imagined. Marilyn's earlier book, Finding the Wild Inside, revealed how she had learned to trust her dreams, intuitions, and connection with nature in her daily life. Her art unfailingly revealed even deeper truths. Surgery is an invasion of the body that profoundly affects both patient and surgeon, particularly when embarking on a nine-hour procedure. When Marilyn was wheeled into the operating room, she was fully open to her healing, as were her physician and his medical team. May books like this be available to medical students and future patients as they embark on procedures that require both impersonal skill and intimate human connection at the border of life and death."" -Tansy Chapman, Episcopal priest, medical social worker, and author of Rose Gray, a novel set in 1947 postwar England"
