Overview

What factors help a burgeoning entrepreneur move forward and persevere through the hardships of the startup phase? Why do some entrepreneurs get stuck in the idea stage, while others are able to successfully implement their idea and grow their business? Why do serial entrepreneurs continue to start new businesses even after experiencing one failure after another? What helps existing small business owners weather the storms and bounce back from setbacks? These are some of the questions we explore in the Resilient Entrepreneur. Resiliency, like entrepreneurship, is a learnable process. It is comprised of three main phases: The adverse experience and absorption of its resulting effects A period of rehabilitation and regeneration Reflection on the meaning of the adversity and lessons learned Looking at how people navigate these phases, we explore frameworks for better understanding entrepreneurial resilience in terms of emotional, cognitive, and social resources we need to persevere. The practical tools and methods outlined in this book equip new entrepreneurs with the knowledge and confidence they need to take the bold leap of becoming an entrepreneur.

My passion is working with entrepreneurs who have an idea along with the desire and drive to make it a reality; they know that they will change the world with their idea, but just don't know how to do it. That's a common place for the first-time entrepreneur. You have these wonderful ideas, but don't know how to make it reality. If you just had the funding, you could do it! Hold on to that money. Instead of investing it into a startup idea without a well-thought out plan that is executable, invest in this book, The Resilient Entrepreneur. Why this book and not one of the many others out there? This book isn't just about writing a business plan; it helps you personally become an entrepreneurial-minded individual. The author, Mr. Lance McNeill, lives by the principles that he has written about in his book. He has applied these principles to countless startups and growth focused established businesses. He has seen the success of these principles across different business types: product, service, Internet based, brick-and-mortar, or any other business. The concepts that he presents for you in this book were written especially for you. He wants you to be successful. He knows that these tools are important in your success. Why does he care about your success? Because he is passionate about seeing others succeed. He believes that there is room for all of our successes, and it's true. I encourage you to find others to read and go through this book together. Having a successful business is more than a business plan. It's also embracing the important qualities of a successful entrepreneur. Do the exercises in the book. Share them with others - be accountable for what you want to do. Surround yourself with others who want to support you as they are going on their journey as well. Together, you can take your dream and put it into actionable activities. You can do this. Increase your chances for success by learning from the mistakes of others. The examples in this book are memorable and teachable moments. The quotes will inspire you to keep going, especially when you reach a difficult time and you think you have to give up. I have known Lance since he was an undergraduate in one of my entrepreneurial classes. Although I believe that my entrepreneurial students are the best, every once in a while, someone very special comes into my class. They have that it value, I just know that there are great accomplishments in their future. I keep in contact with those individuals, because watching their path inspires me. Lance is one of those individuals. Through his experiences, I am learning from him now. Join me in learning from Lance and follow your dreams to the next level. Dr. J R Minifie Director, Service-Learning Excellence Program Texas State University I-Corps Site for Entrepreneurship Professor, Management As a mentor and adviser to new and experienced entrepreneurs I am often asked to recommend books which offer sound, practical business advice. In consulting work I usually suggest clients pick up books with plentiful and relevant case studies. And as a professor I am always looking for material with case studies built on sound empirical evidence. Lance McNeill's book, The Resilient Entrepreneur, does all of those things... and does them exceptionally well. This book should be a part of your library whether you are embarking on your first entrepreneurial journey or lead an established organization pursuing intrepreneurial thinking and strategy. The concepts in the Resilient Entrepreneur will make you a better leader and help your organization succeed. -Dr. Miha Vindis Founding Partner at Engage Leadership Consulting
