Overview

Steve Kaufman's story continues from the August of 68' in this second book of the Steve Kaufman series. It's 1981 and his life and beliefs, particularly his faith, are shattered when another tragedy upends his world. When his grief subsides, he's not sure how to move forward. Meanwhile, there is a wave sweeping all levels of society from slums to corporate board rooms, including the Chicago area where Steve still lives. It's called cocaine. Everyone has tried it and Steve's friends at work introduce it to him. He enjoys the effect, momentarily masking his painful past. A chance meeting with a man by the name of Manuel Torres, a high-ranking member of a drug cartel, forms an unlikely friendship between the two men and turns into a life-changing experience for Steve. History repeats itself when a new reckless thrill takes hold and controls Steve's life, just as he experienced something similar for a few days back in 1968 after the first tragedy that rocked his young adult life. He also embarks on a new romantic relationship, one that may be doomed from the start. She is not only someone he should not be involved with, but he continually asks himself if it's love or lust. The one thing he does know is that he wants to be with her no matter what happens. It all collapses as the authorities' new war on drugs changes everyone's lives. Will Steve seek a new start away from his past, or will his life be doomed from what he's done?
