His books include the New York Times bestselling The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt, The Nile, and his newest, A World Beneath the Sands (forthcoming from W. W. Norton in September 2020). He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a member of the international editorial board of the Journal of Egyptian History.
