Overview

After World War II, Professor S.K. Mitra wrote a comprehensive book entitled ""The Upper Atmosphere"", which dealt with information available from ground-based and balloon-borne experiments. As a result, other topics such as day airglow were investigated. Since then, ground-based experiments using incoherent backscattering have been carried out, and new information on the ozonosphere has been obtained. The dramatic discovery of ozone holes forms a new chapter. While dealing with the limits of the atmosphere, reference is made to interstellar molecules whose discovery has raised considerable scientific curiosity. Knowledge of the solar-terrestrial relationship has advanced a great deal as information relating to solar radiation is now available from higher energy photons in the UV, EUV, and even X-ray regimes. All this information is incorporated in the present volume and presented under the title of ""The Neutral Upper Atmosphere"".
